Nearest Railway Station
The easiest way to get to the Gallery is to walk.
Arriving by Foot
The route involves crossing the road from the station then entering Princes Street Gardens for a pleasant traffic free walk to the Gallery. This involves only a five minute walk to reach the gallery complex on The Mound.
Arriving by Bike
It is a very short distance from Waverley Station to the Scottish National Gallery. The best route is to leave the station by the ramp then cycle to the Gallery by way of Princes Street Gardens to avoid using heavily congested Princes Street.
Nearest cycle parking
Cycle racks are available in the gallery area at several places.
Cycle carriage on trains
The city buses, Lothian Buses, have no facility for cycle carriage but the distance from Waverley Station in the city centre to the Gardens is less than 2 miles.
Edinburgh Waverley is served by local, regional, and intercity ScotRail trains which usually have four cycle spaces. Some electric trains have no or only two spaces but allow cycles to be stored in the doorways (on the right side of the train). Bicycles do not require reservations on ScotRail services to Waverley except for trains from Inverness and Aberdeen. Bicycle reservations for these services can be made by contacting ScotRail telesales on 0330 303 0111 or visiting a station ticket office. Full details are contained in the ScotRail Connections Guide.
Waverley is also served by long-distance trains operated by CrossCountry, TransPennine Express, Virgin Trains East Coast, and Virgin Trains West Coast. These operators carry between two and six bicycles and require a reservation, which can be made by contacting the train company or visiting a ticket office.
Arriving by Bus
No bus necessary as the Gallery is only five minutes walk from station.
